A Singapore resident's discovery of worms in a pack of onions ordered from Pandamart has sparked concerns about the quality of fresh produce sold through online grocery platforms. The Singapore Food Agency and Foodpanda are investigating the incident and have pledged to strengthen quality assurance processes.
A Singapore resident recently raised concerns about the quality of fresh produce sold through online grocery platforms after discovering worms in a pack of onions he ordered from Pandamart.
On July 10, the individual purchased a 700g pack of BrightFarms China Red Onions from the Pandamart outlet in Yio Chu Kang. Upon closer inspection, he found that the onions were infested with worms. He shared photos and videos of the incident with Stomp, showing at least one white worm wriggling on the onion. Pandamart refunded the affected item, but the individual expressed his belief that the incident highlighted potential issues with the quality of fresh produce sold online.
'I stopped buying groceries online after this incident too,' he said. In response to Stomp's queries on July 16, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) stated that they are looking into the matter and may engage the individual for more details. The SFA reminded that maintaining good food hygiene and cleanliness is a joint responsibility between food operators and consumers. A Foodpanda representative also responded on July 16, stating that the company takes food quality and safety seriously.
They promptly refunded the customer and conducted a thorough review with their relevant teams. The representative noted that the issue was not externally visible and could not be detected during their routine quality assurance checks. The company inspected the affected store with the SFA and its pest control partner, finding no evidence of pest activity. They have also raised the matter with their supplier and are working together to review the source of the issue.
Foodpanda stated that they will continue to review and strengthen their quality assurance processes and work closely with suppliers to ensure items meet their quality standards. In an email correspondence seen by Stomp, the SFA informed the individual that the Pandamart store in question maintains proper receiving, preparation, and packing protocols, as well as regular pest control measures
