The Crown is exercising its discretion to file a direct indictment against Gamon Jay Leacock, sending the high-risk offender straight to trial in Nova Scotia Supreme Court without a preliminary inquiry in provincial court.

“I don’t get it,” Leacock said. “If they knew they were going to do this, why didn’t this happen a long time ago?” “I am aware that there’s an approval process in the Public Prosecution Service,” Simmons said. “I’m aware from previous cases that it takes some time. I’m not offering that on behalf of the Crown, just sharing with you, Mr. Leacock, my experience.”

Halifax Regional Police issued a high-risk offender notification about Leacock last October. The advisory said he was living in the Halifax area after serving a prison sentence for 30 offences, including nine counts of robbery and two of sexual assault with a weapon.Police responded Jan. 15 at about 3:05 p.m. to a call about a robbery on Cunard Street in Halifax.

Police arrested Leacock at about 3:30 p.m. in a backyard on Hunter Street. He was taken to hospital for treatment and allegedly attempted to flee but was immediately apprehended by police.
