The spring football leagues said in a pair of statements their combined venture will “establish best-in-class operations based on the most recent seasons of both leagues.”
Both leagues said that more details on the merged product, assuming it becomes a reality, will be announced at a later date.Among the details awaiting clarification is the ownership of the new league, and where viewers will find its product. The XFL is co-owned by actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and his ex-wife, business executive Dany Garcia, as well as RedBird Capital Partners. The USFL is owned by Fox Corp., and its games this year were shown on Fox and NBC platforms.
Another issue that may need to be hashed out is the new venture’s composition, specifically if it will keep the eight teams in each league to form a 16-team entity. Both leagues feature a Houston-based squad. The XFL’s other seven teams are located in Arlington, Tex.; Orlando; Las Vegas; San Antonio; Seattle; St. Louis; and Washington, D.C. The USFL has teams representing Birmingham, Al.; Detroit; East Rutherford, N.J.; Memphis; New Orleans; Philadelphia; and Pittsburgh.
“We are extremely proud of what we have built over the past two seasons,” the USFL said in a letter sent Thursday to its players . “We have shown that the professional spring football model can work — and, in many ways, have done what many football and business minds thought was impossible. The USFL became the first spring league at scale in approximately 40 years to come back and play a second season. And it happened because of YOU.
“Meanwhile, the XFL defined its own success this past season,” the letter continued, “cementing that the time is right to combine the USFL and XFL into a joint entity. … We realize this news creates many questions, and we will continue to communicate with all of you as new information becomes available throughout this process.
to derail the return in midseason. Johnson and his partners then bought the league and began play again this year.
