Oswaldo Cabrera continued a trend Saturday night by homering at PNC Park one day after visiting the Roberto Clemente Museum and holding of Clemente's game-used bats.

Running around the bases, he also was happy that he’d continued his hot week of hitting with a long-time-coming home run, his first in 105 days, 51 games, 26 starts and 110 plate appearances.

But waiting at the end of the dugout was center fielder Estevan Florial, who was there yelling, “THE BAT, THE BAT!”The night before, Cabrera had three hits in the Yankees’ comeback win over the Pirates on Roberto Clemente Day, then he and several teammates attended a Friday late-night party at The Clemente Museum, which is about three miles from PNC Park.

“That’s a hundred percent true,” Cabrera excitedly told a small group of reporters after Saturday’s game. “I can’t imagine that that happened . I’m so happy. I’m just waiting to see in person because I’m just so happy about it.”Cabrera felt a connection to the Pirates’ immortal No. 21. He’s a native of Venezuela who is proud to a Latino ballplayer. Clemente was a Puerto Rican.

He was schooled on how much of a humanitarian Clemente was, even beyond New Year’s Eve 1972 when he was killed at age 38 in a plane crash off the coast of San Juan. There had been deadly earthquake in Nicaragua a few days earlier and Clemente wanted to help as many people as possible, so his plane was loaded 4,200 pounds overweight with supplies, and it crashed into the Atlantic shortly after takeoff.
