Astros' Yordan Alvarez progresses to next step as he recovers from hand soreness

Houston Astros outfielder Yordan Alvarez during spring training workouts at the Astros spring training complex at The Ballpark of the Palm Beaches on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2023 in West Palm Beach .WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — With opening day less than two weeks away, Yordan Alvarez took a step toward making sure he'll be ready by March 30 when he took swings on the field for the first time this spring Friday morning.

and didn't swing a bat at all until last weekend. He has been taking part in outfield drills and defensive work all spring. Even with hand issues last season, Alvarez hit a career-best 37 home runs, finished third in American League MVP voting and played in 135 games. Hand soreness caused him to miss five straight games in early September before he went on to hit three home runs in 13 postseason games en route to a World Series championship.

The next step in Alvarez's progression would be getting into his first spring training game. After Friday, the Astros have just eight games left in Florida before returning home for a couple exhibitions against Class AAA Sugar Land.
