The statement accessory this season is a silver ring that’s a cross between a signet and a thumbprint. The designer? Gloria Steinem.
The ring is the result of a collaboration between the feminist activist and icon and the jeweler Jill Platner, who came together on the occasion of the new Hillary Clinton and Chelsea Clinton Apple TV+ documentary series,. “We met through an incredible friend of mine, [the feminist writer and activist] Amy Richards,” Platner recalled on a recent Zoom.
In the fourth episode of the series, Steinem joins the two Clintons at Platner’s studio and the four women chat while making their own jewelry. Although jewelry might feel out of left field, it is in fact part of Steinem’s family history: Her sister was a gemologist, and her father was an antiques dealer who bought and sold jewelry.
