Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen overcame a shaky start to secure a victory in the first round of the Australian Open.
Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen started her Australian Open campaign with a 7-6(3) 6-1 victory over Anca Todoni on Sunday. The match took place under the closed roof of the Rod Laver Arena after a thunderstorm disrupted play at Melbourne Park. Zheng, the Chinese fifth seed, admitted to making some unforced errors but fought through to win the first set in a tiebreaker. She then dominated the second set.
The 22-year-old is hoping to follow in the footsteps of compatriot Li Na, who won the Australian Open in 2014. Meanwhile, Mirra Andreeva became the first player to reach the second round, defeating Marie Bouzkova 6-3 6-3. The tournament schedule was impacted by the rain, but an extra day added last year mitigates the backlog. Top seed Aryna Sabalenka begins her quest for a third consecutive title against Sloane Stephens in the evening session on Rod Laver Arena. On the men's side, Alexander Zverev and Kei Nishikori were in action, while Australian fans will have to wait until Monday for Nick Kyrgios' return
