Property owners of a Covid-19 test site want to turn it back into a used car lot but a stalemate between residents prevents it

AutoMaxx, once a used car lot and repurposed into an On Demand Covid Test facility, sits on Hemphill Street in Fort Worth on Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2023. The building has been proposed to be rezoned as a residential area and razed for a two-story townhome. The Fort Worth City Council denied the request of a zoning change in the Jennings-May St. Louis neighborhood on Tuesday night that would have allowed a COVID-19 testing site to become a used car lot.

Community leader and member of the United Hispanic Council Fernando Florez fears the possibility of gentrification with a zoning change could increase property values — and taxes — and displace residents. The property owner, Martin Quezada, wants to change the zoning ordinance of the property to a used car lot which it was befor. He wants to update the zoning ordinance because now the property is a COVID-19 testing site.
