The social companion robot Lovot , developed by Japanese firm Groove X, has demonstrated significant positive impacts on emotional well-being and engagement for both the elderly and children with high support needs in a pilot study conducted in Singapore . The study, involving AWWA (a non-profit social service agency) and the Singapore University of Social Sciences, in partnership with Temasek Foundation, explored the effects of Lovot 's presence across diverse participant groups, revealing notable improvements in various aspects of life and care. The doll-like robot's design promotes a warm and engaging atmosphere, which facilitates attention, participation, and emotional connections during both planned and spontaneous activities.

AWWA stated that interactions with Lovot showed an improved quality of life, increased happiness, and meaningful companionship among seniors, including those battling dementia. Simultaneously, the study observed enhanced physical well-being, better school environment readiness, and improved mobility in children with high support needs. These children displayed heightened focus in class, enhanced emotional regulation with reduced instances of meltdowns, and a notable increase in communication attempts, encompassing non-verbal interactions, eye contact, and overall responsiveness. The positive outcomes suggest the potential of social robots to enhance human care in the social service sector.

Furthermore, the study highlighted the support Lovot offers to caregivers. The robot assisted in minimizing the need for constant prompting and supervision, enabling more independent engagement during activities, and subsequently easing the pressures of caregiving. AWWA emphasized that these findings underscore the potential of social robots, when utilized thoughtfully within organized programs, to complement human-led interventions, cultivating a more responsive and nurturing care environment.

The study, which spanned nearly two years from July 2024 to March 2026, involved a total of 117 participants — 105 seniors and 66 children with high support needs. The results offered compelling anecdotal evidence of Lovot's impact. One senior participant shared that Lovot acts as a comforting companion, providing a sense of response and happiness, while a caregiver of a child with high support needs recounted how the robot helped the child become more attentive and engaged in learning, marking a significant milestone in their educational journey.

AWWA will evaluate expanding the use of Lovot in their programs, including both senior care and early intervention initiatives, in addition to pre-school settings. The organization believes the robot demonstrates promise for enhancing care delivery. As Singapore grapples with growing caregiving demands within both its aging population and disability sectors, the study serves as a testament to the potential of human-centered innovation when thoroughly tested and locally validated. AWWA believes that this approach improves care, supports caregivers, and improves the quality of life for those receiving care.

The project is scheduled to be featured at the World Ageing Festival, taking place from April 14 to 15, where the study's findings will be presented and the technology demonstrated. This platform offers an opportunity to showcase how social robots can be integrated into care environments. The deployment of Lovot provides a model for how technology can integrate in a way that provides improved mental health and improves overall well being and engagement with different age groups and their specific needs. Further study of the different uses for the robots in care settings could potentially further increase the scope and positive effects. The study shows a promising path forward for the use of technology to support both the elderly population and children with high support needs in a society that is facing a growing need for assistance in these areas.
