The Singapore Army is expanding its training capabilities with a new multi-mission range complex, offering national servicemen realistic scenario-based training, including drone-related exercises and simulated combat environments. This new facility will complement the existing complex and enhance the Army's ability to prepare soldiers for modern warfare.
The Singapore Army is set to enhance its training capabilities with the construction of a second multi-mission range complex . This new facility, announced by Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing in Parliament, will provide national service men with advanced and realistic training environments. The announcement was made on Friday (Feb 27) as part of the ministry's spending plans.
The new complex aims to build upon the success of the existing multi-mission range complex at Pasir Laba Camp in Jurong, which has served generations of national servicemen in honing their marksmanship skills. The existing facility, commissioned in 2013, allows for the simulation of diverse conditions, including day and night scenarios and varied range lengths, significantly reducing training time compared to traditional outdoor ranges. This expansion reflects the Army's commitment to providing soldiers with state-of-the-art training facilities that prepare them for a wide range of operational demands.\The second Multi-Mission Range Complex, strategically located at Bedok Camp, will feature six 100-metre ranges equipped with video targetry systems. This will allow soldiers to engage in live-fire exercises against backdrops that simulate complex and dynamic scenarios. These scenarios include realistic depictions of potential threats, such as neutralizing 'terrorists' who might attack critical infrastructure. The complex's design incorporates features that will enable soldiers to train in a more precise and realistic manner, addressing the evolving nature of modern warfare. This includes double-height ceilings, designed specifically for training with and against elevated targets, like drones, which are increasingly relevant in contemporary military operations. The Ministry of Defence (Mindef) has stated that this new range complex is designed to meet increasingly complex operational demands through scenario-based training. Furthermore, the new facility will be conveniently located near the future Sungei Bedok MRT station, offering enhanced accessibility for soldiers. This will benefit not only national servicemen, but also members of the SAF Volunteer Corps and the National Cadet Corps. They will also be able to book range slots directly through the OneNS application.\The development of the new range complex will also lead to the repurposing of existing firing ranges. The Ministry of Defence will repurpose six live-firing ranges, including four located at the SAFTI Military Institute in Jurong and two in Nee Soon. Six other ranges will remain operational, including two located in Pulau Tekong for full-time national servicemen (NSFs) to hone their shooting fundamentals during Basic Military Training. The new facility is expected to significantly increase the Army's training capacity and allow for more efficient use of resources. The Army will also be evaluating upgrades to the existing multi-mission range complex at Pasir Laba Camp to ensure that it continues to meet the evolving training needs of the Singapore Armed Forces. Senior Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Liu, the Army's head of training development branch, indicated that the features shared by both complexes, such as the ability to simulate different environmental conditions, would remain relevant. The goal is to provide soldiers with training environments that can effectively prepare them for a variety of operational scenarios and ensure that the Singapore Army remains ready to meet the challenges of the future
