Advisories about enterovirus D68, or EV-D68, have been issued after the CDC noted more children were being hospitalized for severe respiratory illness.

Tracking EV-D68 is difficult because most hospitals and doctor’s offices don’t do the kind of testing needed to identify the specific type of enterovirus.Officials are concerned after the COVID-19 pandemic fueled a continued backslide in vaccinations for all diseases. Dr. Robert Kim-Farley, an epidemiologist and infectious diseases expert with the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, said tactics to protect against EV-D68 infection are common sense: washing hands and staying at home if sick.
