A reputable source suggests that a major new feature is coming to Apple Watch, possibly just months away.
This makes sense. It’s one thing to have a sensor which can look out for particular properties and another for the software to be able to accurately interpret what’s found. Kuo explains: “The challenge in implementing precise body temperature measurement is that skin temperature quickly varies depending on outside environments. A smartwatch can't support core temperature measurement in terms of hardware, so it needs an excellent algorithm to work together.
But there’s better news. Kuo says that for Apple Watch Series 8, this fall, Apple could “take body temperature if the algorithm can meet Apple’s high requirements before mass production.” Time is ticking then, which seems appropriate given we’re talking about a watch. If rumors were right that the feature was planned for last year but Apple wasn’t happy enough with how things were going for it to be included, then surely another year would be enough for it all to fall into place? Perhaps, but Apple is notoriously perfectionist about these things. It won’t include something that doesn’t work.
