Dallas Fire-Rescue responded just after midnight to see thick, black smoke coming from where the AMC movie theater once was, spokesman Jason Evans said. About 50 firefighters responded to the two-alarm fire in the three-story building at 13331 Preston Road, Evans said. Firefighters worked their way through the building to find a fire on the ground floor, which had mostly burned itself out, and another fire on the second floor.Four hours later, the fire was declared extinguished. Most of that time was spent ventilating smoke and confirming there was no remaining fire, rather than extinguishing flames, Evans said.

A homeless man was rescued from the roof, where he sought refuge from the blaze, but no injuries were reported. The man is not believed to have anything to do with the fire, Evans said.Developers bought the Valley View Center site in 2012 with plans to demolish the structure and turn the property into a mix of retail, apartments, office space and a park, but
