Changi Airport Group (CAG) has temporarily halted a trial program for new minibus services intended for large passenger groups following protests from premium taxi drivers who claimed the trial negatively impacted their earnings.
Changi Airport Group ( CAG ) has temporarily halted a trial program for new minibus services catering to large passenger groups. This decision follows escalating discontent among drivers of premium taxis, who felt their livelihoods were being negatively impacted by the trial. The situation reached a boiling point on February 13th when approximately 70 drivers from ComfortDelGro and Prime Taxi collectively decided to cease picking up passengers from Changi Airport between 9 am and midnight.
The drivers' primary grievance stemmed from changes observed in passenger allocation at the airport's ground transport concierge since the start of February. Drivers reported that passengers typically served by premium taxis, groups of three to six individuals, were being directed to the minibuses, which have a capacity of 13 passengers. This shift, they claimed, significantly reduced their earnings, as they were securing significantly fewer rides. Mr. Jayamogan Mogan, a 73-year-old premium taxi driver, shared that he used to secure rides after waiting around 30 minutes to an hour, but now faced wait times of four to five hours. Another driver, Mr. Wu, 44, highlighted that many premium taxi drivers rely heavily on airport pickups for their income, and this arrangement had caused their earnings to plummet by up to half. The drivers gathered at the ground transport concierge on February 13th, expressing their concerns to CAG and other relevant parties. CAG, in response, acknowledged the misunderstandings that arose during the trial implementation and stated that they did not approve any prioritization of the minibuses over maxi-cabs. They are currently consulting with stakeholders, including the National Taxi Association (NTA), to find a resolution and have suspended the minibus trial until further notice
