A Chinese actor was tricked into traveling to Thailand for a fake film job and then trafficked to Myanmar. Police in China have apprehended a suspect involved in the case. Chinese authorities are working with Thailand and Myanmar to combat the growing threat of online scam centers in the region.

Police in China have detained a man suspected of involvement in the case of a Chinese actor who was tricked into travelling to Thailand for a film job and then trafficked to Myanmar . The Public Security Ministry announced the arrest on Sunday (Jan 26), stating that the suspect, surnamed Yan, was apprehended as part of a joint effort involving the ministry's task force, the Chinese Embassy in Thailand, and Thai law enforcement. Yan was returned to China on Saturday.

The actor, 22-year-old Wang Xing, travelled to Thailand earlier this month after receiving an unsolicited offer to appear in a film being shot there. Upon arriving in Bangkok, he was kidnapped and taken to an online scam compound in Myanmar. These compounds are believed to house hundreds of thousands of victims globally, forced to work for criminal networks running fraudulent telecommunications operations. Wang's case garnered national attention after his girlfriend launched a social media campaign highlighting his plight. He was eventually freed by Thai police who discovered him in Myanmar. The ministry pledged to intensify efforts to dismantle these scam centers, enhance international law enforcement cooperation, and collaborate with involved countries to detain criminals and rescue Chinese citizens. The proliferation of these scam compounds, largely in Southeast Asia since the Covid-19 pandemic, has defrauded individuals worldwide, generating billions of dollars annually for organized crime groups, many of Chinese origin. Last week, officials from China, Myanmar, and Thailand agreed to work together to eradicate these centers in Myanmar. China and Thailand also committed to establish a coordination center in Bangkok to investigate and combat the scam complexes flourishing along the Thai border with Myanmar and Cambodia. This initiative is expected to commence operations next month
