Following online controversy and accusations of spreading false information, Douyin has permanently banned the accounts of Zhang Lan and Wang Xiaofei. The move came after allegations of Zhang Lan promoting false narratives about the arrangements for Barbie Hsu's ashes, claims that were refuted by Barbie's family and the flight charter company.

Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, has banned the accounts of Zhang Lan , the former mother-in-law of the late Barbie Hsu, and her son, Wang Xiaofei. The move came after days of online controversy sparked by allegations of Zhang Lan spreading false information about Barbie Hsu's family, especially regarding arrangements for Barbie's ashes.

Zhang Lan had been accused of promoting false narratives about the chartered flight that brought Barbie's remains back from Japan, claiming it was paid for by Wang Xiaofei. This claim was refuted by Barbie's family and by the flight charter company, Jetbay. Barbie Hsu's sister, Dee Hsu, issued a statement through her manager, clarifying that the flight and all other arrangements were handled by the Hsu family. Netizens also alleged that a banned account, 'I am Xia Xiao Jian,' which had made the initial false claim about the flight, was actually Zhang Lan's godson. This allegation was denied by Zhang Lan in an interview with online site Ifeng Finance. The final blow to Zhang Lan and Xiaofei's online presence came when Jetbay publicly dismissed the online rumors, confirming that the cost of the chartered flight was indeed signed off by Dee Hsu's company. Douyin's decision to ban the accounts came on February 8, the seventh day of Barbie Hsu's passing, which is considered a significant day in Chinese tradition as it is believed to be the time when the spirit of the deceased returns home. The ban also coincided with what would have been Barbie Hsu's third-year wedding anniversary to her husband, South Korean musician DJ Koo.In a statement by the 'Douyin Security Centre', it alleged that Zhang Lan's account had promoted false content 'to obtain commercial benefits', drum up undue hype, and that the account-holder had 'not taken steps to correct this even after being punished'. Another account using Zhang Lan's name as well as Xiaofei's account have also been 'banned indefinitely', the statement read. It also highlighted that another banned account, 'I am Xia Xiao Jian', had disseminated false information, misleading the public.Barbie Hsu passed away on February 2 in Japan during a family vacation. The cause of death was reported to be due to a sudden illness. Her untimely death at the age of 48 sparked an outpouring of grief and condolences from fans and celebrities worldwide. Many have expressed their support for her family and hope for peace during this difficult time.
