A five-vehicle accident on Nicoll Highway in Singapore resulted in a fatal car fire. The driver of a Porsche was trapped and killed in the blaze. Seven others involved in the collision were assessed, with two taken to the hospital.
A car driver tragically died in a fire on Nicoll Highway in Singapore on March 2nd following a five-vehicle accident. The Singapore Civil Defence Force ( SCDF ) and police responded to reports of a burning car on Nicoll Highway towards Guillemard Road, before the KPE entrance, at 2:10 pm. Firefighters swiftly extinguished the flames using a water jet, but sadly, a man was found deceased inside the charred remains of the vehicle. A paramedic pronounced him dead at the scene.
Seven individuals from the other involved vehicles were assessed by the SCDF. Two men, aged 53 and 66, were transported conscious to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, while the others declined medical attention. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by both the SCDF and the police.Dashcam footage circulating on Facebook depicts a dark blue Porsche speeding down Nicoll Highway in the extreme right lane. The vehicle overtakes several cars, breaches the road divider, and flips onto its left side. It continues to skid sideways at high speed on the slip road leading to the KPE, colliding with several cars in its path. The Porsche bounces before finally crashing into the road divider, igniting into flames that engulfed the car. Images from the aftermath show the severely burned luxury car, with only its rear end recognizable. A passenger in one of the cars hit by the Porsche recounted the incident as a terrifying experience. The 34-year-old, who wished to remain anonymous as Mr. A, had been in the backseat of a silver Grab car with a friend when the Porsche struck, smashing the boot. Mr. A described the events as occurring 'in a matter of seconds.' He and his companion were unable to open the back doors, so they climbed to the driver's seat to escape. Mr. A stated, 'All I was thinking was to get out of the car as fast as I can as I imagined it might explode. I'm just really lucky we had only minor scratches and back pain.' In the aftermath of the crash, which Mr. A described as 'traumatic,' he said his Grab driver and another individual rushed to assist the Porsche driver. 'He was screaming for help and knocking against his window, but they couldn't help as the flames were so strong,' Mr. A recounted. The Land Transport Authority provided an update on X at 2:20 pm, stating that the Nicoll Highway entrance had been closed due to the accident. This incident follows a series of recent car accidents in Singapore. On February 27th, a six-car collision on the PIE near Paya Lebar resulted in two vehicles catching fire, but all six drivers escaped unharmed. On February 18th, the SCDF advised motorists to carry fire extinguishers in their vehicles after an electric vehicle (EV) caught fire on the BKE, leaving one person with minor burns and requiring three water jets to extinguish the blaze. The SCDF highlighted the increased risk of reignition in EVs due to their lithium-ion batteries. Car fires have slightly increased in 2024 compared to 2023, with 220 recorded incidents last year, up from 215 the previous year. The SCDF attributes the primary causes to ignition sources such as overheating and electrical faults in the engine compartment
