At long last, the Longhorns seem less concerned with being “back” than with being...

Texas Head Coach Steve Sarkisian before the start of Friday’s Alamo Bowl game against Washington at the Alamo Dome. For second-year coach Steve Sarkisian, all of that almost was beside the point. Nine years after Mack Brown was fired for losing five games with an Alamo Bowl team trending downward, Sarkisian raved about the attitude of a five-loss Alamo Bowl team that he said “is fighting to win, and fighting to win together.

In 2013, when they fired Brown at the end of an 8-5 season, it had become increasingly apparent his recruiting mojo was slipping away, and that he lacked a clear plan to fix it. This year, even dealing with ugly losses to Texas Tech and Oklahoma State, Sarkisian assembled a Top 5 class led by Arch Manning, and he at least can sell the idea that things are getting better.

Granted, part of the reason things improved in his second season is that the Longhorns had taken such a significant step back in his first, when they went 5-7 in 2021. And granted, nights like Thursday — when the Longhorns managed just three first-half points as Sarkisian’s early game plan fell flat — haven’t done much to cement his reputation as a supposed offensive savant.

Ewers, who transferred from Ohio State a year after being rated as the consensus top quarterback recruit in the country, still hasn’t done enough to convince anyone he’s the Longhorns long-awaited long-term answer at the sport’s most important position. He completed 31-of-47 passes for a career-high 369 yards Thursday, but the numbers didn’t tell the whole story.

On one side of the ledger, Ewers was hurt by at least two costly Xavier Worthy drops that could have gone for long touchdowns. On the other side, Ewers missed badly on a couple of key throws in the first half, and wound up padding his stat line with a meaningless 49-yard heave to midfield on the game’s final play.
