Five individuals, including four suspects apprehended in Tampines and one in Joo Chiat, were arrested for their alleged involvement in loanshark harassment activities. The arrests followed incidents of property vandalism and debtor notes left at residences.
Two men and two women, aged between 18 and 27, were arrested for their suspected involvement in a case of loanshark harassment in Tampines. The police were alerted on Jan 3 at about 5.50am to the gate of a Tampines Street 33 flat secured with a bicycle lock and a debtor’s note left behind. Through follow-up investigations and with the aid of images from police cameras, officers from Bedok Police Division established the identities of the four suspects and arrested them within the same day.
Preliminary investigations revealed that they were involved in another case of loanshark harassment.The police were alerted to black paint splashed on the main door, gate and steps of a Joo Chiat Road flat on Jan 2.Through follow-up investigations and with the aid of images from police cameras, officers from Bedok Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him within two hours of the report.All five were charged in court on Jan 4 under the Moneylenders Act 2008. For first-time offenders, the offence of loan shark harassment carries a fine between $5,000 and $50,000, with imprisonment of up to five years and caning of up to six strokes
