Study finds GPs are working longer sessions than thought - but millions of patients are still struggling to get timely appointments

Medics have told i that Labour may never meet its pledge to ‘end the 8am scramble’ for appointments unless core funding for GPs rises significnatly

GPs work in “sessions”, four hours and 10 minutes long, equating to a half day of work – meaning a 37.5-hour working week would be achieved by nine sessions. , used data from surveys of GPs between 2010 and 2021. The findings show that GPs have reduced the number of sessions they work per week, but that sessions have become longer.

He said: “We found that over half of GPs work at least the NHS Digital standard definition of full time definition of 37.5 hours per week, and average hours per session worked in 2021 was 50 per cent greater than the BMA standard definition of a session’s duration. “ payment has not been uplifted in line with inflation or patient need, so over the years primary care has had to do more and more with less and less, which can be seen in the difficulties people have in getting to see their GP and in terms of patient satisfaction.”
