Green Lantern Was In Fear of Being Outed Close This is more so an indictment on the FBI than the JSA, as until the series goes to show otherwise, the JSA may have not known about Alan being gay or about him being blackmailed to join. However, it does force readers to view his tenure with the JSA with entirely new eyes, especially given how closely tied this iteration of the Green Lantern is to the group.
This small glimpse of the series also highlights how much of a scary time it was during the 1930s and '40s to be a gay man, even in the DC Universe. Moments like this remind readers that when they read past the more fantastical elements of superhero lore in DC, not even the unstoppable superheroes themselves were guarded from everyday prejudices.
