BEIJING, China –Presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo has reiterated that he had no hand in the aborted release of former Calauan Mayor Antonio Sanchez, who was convicted for the rape-slay of University of the Philippines-Los Baños student Eileen Sarmenta and the murder of her friend Allan Gomez in 1993.
Panelo was reacting to the call of former Justice Harriet Demetriou, the judge who convicted Sanchez on seven counts of reclusion perpetua, for his resignation over the possible early release of the former Calauan mayor.
He then reiterated that the Bureau of Corrections may have just overlooked the provision stating that the Good Conduct Time Allowance does not apply to those who committed heinous crimes. “So on the part of the President, he told me on the very night it broke out, ‘I called Commissioner Faeldon and told him huwag mo release ‘yan .’ Sinabi niya ,” he said.
