Potatoes should never be stored in the fridge as the cold can cause them to become more sweet and increase chemical levels when they are cooked
Storing vegetables in the fridge might seem like a good idea, particularly during summer to protect them from insects and prevent them from spoiling too quickly due to the heat. Yet, Addison LaBonte, who is a recipe developer and the founder of Watch Learn Eat, has recommended against keeping potatoes in the refrigerator if it can be avoided.
She warned: "This can pose a health problem and may be why you see some places suggest against storing potatoes in the fridge if at all possible." Instead, she advises that potatoes should be kept at room temperature, in a dark and cool place within the kitchen to maintain their freshness when stored correctly, reports the Express.
Regarding cut raw potatoes, she said: "Once raw potatoes have been cut they'll last about 24 hours. You should put the cut, raw potatoes in a bowl of cold water, completely submerge them and refrigerate them." Avoid storing potatoes near any heat sources such as stoves, ovens, or appliances like air fryers, as the warmth can cause them to spoil. Additionally, it's advisable to store potatoes separately from other fruits and vegetables. This is because they emit ethylene gas, a growth hormone that can hasten ripening when various produce items are stored together.
