Residents of the Mat-Su are frustrated with properties that aren't being taken care of, and are concerned about the risks they present.

WASILLA, Alaska - The beauty of the Matanuska-Susitna Borough is unmatched, but underneath the towering mountain range peaks lies a growing frustration for many valley residents — derelict properties.

“We noticed that it was kind of abandoned, and we looked online and couldn’t really see who the owners were,” Motes said. “Then we saw someone here and talked to him and he told us that he was a friend of the former owner, and that he had passed away and that the property was in probate.” Motes’ neighbor Rick Grabianowski resides on the adjoining side of the property. He said sometimes the wind will blow lighter trash into his property. Both Motes and Grabianowski have seen people come in and out to attempt to clean up the property, but not much progress has been made.

“We’re starting to see that it’s just — it’s a pretty big problem,” Brown said. “We’re going to have to continue to chip away at it and look at what other solutions we can kind of couple together, and just make it better overall.”spoke about another problem property in their neighborhood, located just south of Meadow Lakes.
