The dashtop bobblehead dog ornament... reimagined? Or something?
, we're used to seeing some, let's just say, interesting technology, but this especially bizarre announcement by Mercedes has us howling like a dachshund at the moon.
You've probably heard of a dachshund, the"hot dog" canine with the long torso, stubby legs, and floppy ears. What you probably hadn't heard of is its German shorthand name,"dackel." And unless you're a Mercedes superfan who also knows German culture, you probably haven't heard of the Wackeldackel, either.
What can best be described as a bobblehead dackel toy that's also known as the"nodding dog," the Wackeldackel became something of an icon in Germany after its debut back in 1965 and a hit with Mercedes owners. Wackeldackels became a fixture on car dashes or at the back shelf behind the rear seats, and they nodded along with you as you drove.
This is where things start to get really ruff. For CES, Mercedes has partnered up with an outfit called Superplastic . They're apparently a huge deal and are known for creating"synthetic celebrities" on social media and associated"hyper limited" toys and appeal to go with them. Superplastic collaborates with some big time musicians, artists, and international brands in its synthetic universe. Now it's the Wackeldackel that's getting the Superplastic treatment.
What on earth any of this has to do with CES is beyond us, but hey, and we learned what a Wackeldackel is, and what Superplastic is and does. Now we're up on a Mercedes icon and an outfit we're sure the kids really dig. So there's that.
