Ng Eng Hen urges Myanmar to “not use Asean to engage in the politics of retaliation”.

SINGAPORE - Myanmar’s objection to other countries joining a platform for defence cooperation between Asean and its partners risks undermining the Asean centrality that has been painstakingly built over more than two decades of defence cooperation, said Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen on Nov 20.

Following a March meeting, the ADMM said it was considering accepting new members for its expanded defence meeting platform, the ADMM-Plus, which currently includes eight dialogue partners: Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, South Korea and the United States. “I think people recognise the difficulty that Myanmar has placed us in,” he said. “They know that Myanmar’s behaviour was not in keeping with leaders’ decision that Myanmar shouldn’t obstruct Asean’s progress and desire to move forward.”
