ANU astrophysicist and cosmologist Dr Brad Tucker says mysterious radio signals coming from the centre of the Milky Way could be a new object.
“A lot of astronomers in Australia are using what’s called ASKAPs, so this is a very new, sensitive radio telescope out in Western Australia,” he told Sky News Australia.
“It’s been monitoring for lots of different things including changes in the sky but not visual changes, things that we see with our eyes but things that we see with radio waves.” Dr Tucker said when astronomers looked at the Milky Way, they found one area which was emitting a signal, which appeared at random intervals.
“Things in space usually have a repeated pattern because they’re going around something or they’re spinning, they kind of have a natural speed or rate,” he said.Dr Tucker said the signal was unlikely to be caused by aliens but it may be a new class of object found in space. “Maybe it’s some sort of new type of star that’s erupting or variable or exploding, so a really cool discovery, once again here from Australia,” he said.
