A man has been charged with fraudulently obtaining $4 million in government funds, U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger said. Gbenga Akinbode, 33, of Newark, faces one count of wire fraud, according to a criminal complaint. He appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Jessica S. Allen in federal court Monday and was released on a $300,000 bond, prosecutors said.
Investigators allege that Akinbode opened a bank account in 2020 and used 120 debit cards to purchase $500,000 in money orders before depositing the funds into the account, according to the complaint.
