The incident happened Saturday when sudden strong winds swept through the area, authorities said.
Lower Southampton Township, Bucks County police and the coroner’s office report the incident happened shortly after 4 p.m. Saturday in the backyard of the child’s home. The boy’s mother and another older sibling were present when the tree split — with a section approximately 25-30 feet in length and 8-10 inches in diameter — striking him in the head, authorities said.
Township police and medics responded and attempted to help the toddler, who was later pronounced dead at the scene by the Bucks County Coroner’s Office. The mother and other sibling were not injured.
