New, clear images of the Orion nebula have been released - and scientists say they've found dozens of rogue planets floating in pairs with no star nearby. There is no explanation for how they ended up together.

Scientists say they have discovered planet-like objects in a distant nebula unconnected to any star to orbit - and floating in pairs. show the Orion Nebula in the clearest detail yet, and researchers say closer investigations throw up a surprising phenomenon.

The planets, some of which are roughly the size of Jupiter, have been dubbed JuBMOs - or Jupiter-Mass Binary Objects - by European Space Agency scientists Samuel Pearson and Mark McCaughrean. "Brilliant scientists have been working on theories and models of star and planet formation for decades," he said.

"We know that we can see JuMBOs, they are right there in the images, but we do not know how they have formed," Mr Pearson said.
