YVHIKV wants other Indigenous artists to do “whatever the hell” they want.
, with the duo nearing a hundred thousand followers in just four months on the app. While their music makes the rounds on the For You Page, YVHIKV says it’s the Indigenous side of TikTok that’s really cemented their rise to fame. “There's been a lot of positive reactions from Indigenous people…and that exposure from the Indigenous community [has] allowed us to get exposure from the non-Indigenous community.
“My grandmother, she spoke Muscogee, but now she forgets how to say things even though she grew up speaking [the language]. My dad isn't fluent, but he knows he knows a lot more Muscogee than other families do,” YVHIKV explains of her decision to write a song in her family’s native language. “Even just through those two generations, the language is dying. Not a lot of people speak it, conversationally, except for just a handful of elders and a few people who are studying it.
