The actress discusses joining iconic shows well into their run and why she was excited to play a part on 'What/If' that doesn't focus on her race.

Samantha Ware knows how to enter a show that’s already established itself as a cultural phenomenon. She co-starred on the final season of Fox’s onetime hit. She got her start by joining productions of musical stalwartsSo Ware was excited about the opportunity to appear in a new program, Netflix’s What/If, from its inception.“Just being able to play a role without having to talk about my race was amazing, as a dark-skinned black woman,” Ware says.
On the program, she plays Angela, a surgeon and wife who is very different than Ware’s earlier roles in those cultural touchpoints. “It feels like a very grown-up role,” she notes. “In my last role, I played a mistress inThe actress, who hails from Lincoln, Nebraska, got her professional start at 19.
“I was going to college, a private liberal arts university, and I had a friend randomly send me a Playbill link to an open casting call. It was one of those cattle calls, you go sign up and wait in line for hours and hope to see one or two casting directors,” Ware remembers. “It was raining, it was October, and I got to Chicago—I had been waitressing and I save up $75 for the 11-hour train ticket from Lincoln to Chicago.
