The Irvine Police Department is breaking down the warning signs of a new scam in which people are calling residents and posing as officers to gain access to their personal information.
Kyle Oldoerp with IPD said in one case, the scammer on the other line pushed for personal information and in the other, they asked for more than $600,000, claiming it was a fraud case investigation.

The extraordinary police takedown of dementia sufferer Clare Nowland on Wednesday in the New South Wales state town of Cooma has prompted a high-level police internal investigation. Two police officers went to Yallambee Lodge, a nursing home that specializes in residents with higher care needs including dementia, after staff reported that Nowland had taken a serrated steak knife from the kitchen. Police Assistant Commissioner Peter Cotter declined to say on Friday whether he thought police had used excessive force.

New Zealand police arrest, charge man in connection with hostel fire that killed at least 6New Zealand police have arrested a man and charged him with two counts of arson in connection with the fire at a Wellington hostel that killed at least six people. Police said Thursday that the investigation is ongoing and they could file more serious charges in relation to the deaths at the scene. Police had earlier said they were treating their inquiries as a homicide investigation. Police Inspector Dion Bennett said they are confident that they are not seeking anybody else in connection with the fire.
