Singapore Police Force closes off parts of Marina Bay ahead of the New Year's Eve countdown due to anticipated large crowds. This is part of the celebrations for Singapore's 60th independence anniversary.

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) closed off parts of Marina Bay on Tuesday (Dec 31) due to large crowds ahead of the New Year countdown event. The areas closed include Jubilee Bridge, Merlion Waterfront, Fullerton Waterfront, Esplanade Waterfront, Marina Bay Sands Waterfront and the Helix Bridge. This marks the first in a series of events celebrating Singapore's 60th anniversary of independence.

Celebrations are taking place in multiple locations, including Marina Bay, the Singapore Sports Hub, and in the heartlands. The police announced last week that they would regulate the number of people entering The Promontory, Merlion Park, Esplanade Park, Esplanade Waterfront Promenade, Marina Bay Sands Waterfront Promenade, and other areas of Marina Bay. Similar crowd control measures are also being implemented at Stadium Roar and Water Sports Centre at the Kallang Basin. As several roads are closed to vehicle traffic, the public is advised to use public transportation to reach the Marina Bay area. The entrances and exits of certain MRT stations will be closed to manage crowd flow, police said, adding that trains may bypass affected stations to divert crowds. Police also urged revellers to stay close to their friends, be vigilant against pickpockets and molesters, keep their bags closed and in front of them, and avoid carrying wallets in their back pockets
