The rising fifth-grader tells me she hopes to find new friends and interests this year. She says she will work hard to make her experience at the new school as good as it was at Almira.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Sophia sits on her couch with a slice of pizza in her hand, taking bites whenever she can, between words. But the opportunity is rare. She has a lot to say.

The move to a new apartment was out of necessity, according to Lynn. Before taking in the girls, she lived by herself in a one-bedroom apartment, which proved too small to serve as the home of three. The sprawling apartment complex contains a number of three-story buildings, each with a manicured lawn and locked dual entrances. The apartment’s windows are big and bright, while the unit’s air conditioners cool the space nicely on this hot July day.“You mean your own room?” I ask.

“My second favorite thing is probably the playground,” she adds. “It’s so big and fun, and I get to go out there a lot. Wanna see?”With Lynn’s permission we head outside to explore the playground. A few minutes later Sophia waves in the direction of the apartment building, at Lynn, who’s keeping watch on her niece from the living room window.

“When I heard that my mom got back in jail it made me sad for her,” Sophia tells me under an Oak tree near the playground, after we finish playing. “But she’s there because of her actions, and it’s not our fault she’s back in jail. I love my mom a lot, but she did bad stuff, and there are consequences.”
