South Korean actress Lee Joo-shil, known for her role in the hit Netflix series Squid Game, has died at the age of 78. Lee's agency, 1230culture, confirmed her passing on Monday, January 27th, after a battle with stomach cancer . Approximately three months ago, her health declined, leading to a diagnosis of stomach cancer following a hospital examination. Born in 1944, Lee enjoyed a career spanning over five decades, excelling in stage, film, television, and Korean dramas.
Her journey began in 1965 as a stage actress, rising to prominence in South Korean theatre throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Lee was celebrated for her performances in classic productions like 'Death of a Salesman' and 'Macbeth', earning critical acclaim. Her transition to the screen saw her appear in numerous films and television dramas, including 'Country Diary' in 1980 and the 2016 zombie thriller 'Train to Busan'. Most recently, she played Park Mal-soon, the mother of Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon), in the second season of 'Squid Game' which premiered on December 26th, just over a month ago.Lee had previously battled stage 3 breast cancer, diagnosed in 1993. Despite her health challenges, she persevered, completing a college degree during her treatment. Following the news of her death, fans of 'Squid Game' took to social media to express their condolences and celebrate her talent. Another fan simply described her as 'such a phenomenal actress'.
