A 65-year-old Singaporean transportation business owner, Jeffrey Ng, shares his secret to maintaining stamina and strength through regular jumping fitness classes. He highlights the importance of staying active in later years, the benefits of social connection through fitness groups, and his philosophy of viewing exercise as daily medicine.
Jeffrey Ng, a 65-year-old transportation business owner, demonstrates remarkable stamina and strength, routinely lifting and moving heavy objects. Many his age would find such tasks challenging. He attributes his vigor to regular jumping fitness classes which he has been attending for six years. \Mr. Ng believes his generation embraces an active lifestyle as they age, unlike their parents who often slowed down significantly in their later years.
He cites advancements like apps from the Health Promotion Board that make it easier for seniors to stay active with health resources, fitness tracking tools, goal-setting features, free workout classes, and workshops. \Six years ago, Mr. Ng and his wife, a homemaker, transitioned from Zumba to jumping fitness after discovering classes on Healthy 365. Seeking a low-impact exercise gentler on the knees, they found jumping fitness to be a perfect fit. On Sundays, they join Forever Young, a walking group they started during the COVID-19 pandemic with a few former neighbors. What began with five members has blossomed into a community of 23 regulars, all in their 60s. Beyond fitness, the group provides a remedy against social isolation. Mr. Ng emphasizes that fitness and social connection have always been intertwined for him. Growing up in a kampung in Potong Pasir, he spent his youth playing football, squash, and cycling with friends. Over time, family and work responsibilities took precedence, leading him to scale back on sports and rely on solo walks to stay active. As his sons became more independent in their mid-50s, Mr. Ng rediscovered time for new activities and forged friendships along the way. These days, he and his wife enjoy exercising with friends, sharing tips about classes and workshops.
