Syrian President Bashar al-Assad met with Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Dec 1, seeking support amid ongoing conflicts. Russian and Syrian military strikes targeted rebel groups in Aleppo and Idlib, marking the first time since the civil war began more than a decade ago that Aleppo city is out of control of Syrian regime forces.

BEIRUT - Syria n President Bashar al-Assad sought to strengthen support from his allies on Dec 1, after a monitor reported that an Islamist-dominated rebel alliance attacked forces of the Iran ian- and Russia n-backed government on Nov 27, the same day a fragile ceasefire took effect in neighboring Lebanon between Israel and Iran -backed Hezbollah.

The jihadist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group and allied factions now control Aleppo city, except the areas controlled by Kurdish forces, according to Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. For the first time since the civil war began over a decade ago, the country’s second-largest city is out of control of Syrian regime forces, Rahman said. On Dec 1, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi travelled to Damascus to meet Assad, stating before his departure that Tehran would firmly support the Syrian government and army. After the talks, Assad emphasized the importance of support from allies and friends in confronting foreign-backed terrorist attacks. On the same day, Syrian and Russian aircraft carried out deadly strikes in support of government forces, according to the Observatory. The strikes killed at least 12 people in Aleppo and nine civilians in the rebel stronghold of Idlib. Russia’s military confirmed it was aiding Syrian government forces in repelling terrorist aggression in the provinces of Idlib, Hama, and Aleppo. Russian and Syrian warplanes targeted a gathering of terrorist organization commanders and large groups of their members in Aleppo, killing dozens. They also destroyed a large vehicle convoy carrying “terrorist” ammunition and equipment in Idlib
