A new male contraceptive implant is being trialled in Melbourne in a world-first study that has researchers hopeful the treatment may one day be used as a “temporary vasectomy”.
Professor Nathan Lawrentschuk, a urologist from Epworth Freemasons and the study’s principal investigator, said the hydrogel dissolves after about two years. He said the “temporary vasectomy” may then be repeated.“If it is successful, it could be an absolute game-changer, ensuring that contraception is a shared responsibility between couples. There has never been an option like this for men, ever,” he said.
“But we have been amazed. We opened up recruitment for this just on social media and the demand was so high we had to close the website down after two days. I was just incredibly fascinated by that. We had hundreds of men doing the screening, and we had to close it down.”Lawrentschuk said the level of interest showed there was rising demand for more contraceptive options for men.
He said many couples often now want fertility to be a shared responsibility, and women often rightfully ask: “why is it always my responsibility?” Lawrentschuk said the sample size would be increased to 50 participants in the first phase of the trial. If the contraceptive implant is found to be effective, a major trial, involving men in Australia and the United States, will be conducted.
“We are confident it is very safe. I guess the biggest risk is that it doesn’t work,” Lawrentschuk said. “But we are watching their semen analyses very regularly.”
