National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum honors Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith's famous diving bare-handed play during 1978 rookie season with Padres

A play Ozzie Smith made in 1978 as a rookie shortstop with the Padres was selected by the MLB Network as the most spectacular defensive play in major league history. But the play’s historical significance couldn’t be properly recognized and truly appreciated until now — with a commemorative bobblehead.A bobblehead of Smith making the famous play was produced for the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum by FOCO and timed for release on Saturday, which is National Bobblehead Day.

It came on April 20, 1978 — just 10 games into the NL record 2,511 games he played at shortstop — with left-hander Randy Jones on the mound in the Padres’ 2-0 win. After the bad hop, Collier wrote, “Reacting with instincts that have amazed the Padres all spring, the 5-8, 150-pounder speared the ball with his bare hand just before he crashed to the dirt. The crowd gave Smith a standing ovation as the Padres returned to the dugout. The applause didn’t stop until the shortstop popped his head out of the dugout and tipped his cap.

Smith never forgot the support he received from Dark, making mention of it 24 years later during his induction speech at the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Any offense Smith provided was a bonus, of course. That’s because his play in the field at a premium position was off the charts.
