Toast Hut, a beloved Singaporean eatery known for its kaya toast, has reopened at a new location with a surprising menu change. The iconic toast has been temporarily removed, replaced by the popular 'cai fan' or economic rice. The owner, Melvin Soh, cited manpower issues as the reason for the change, but assured fans that the toast will return eventually.

Toast Hut has reopened at a new location, serving a surprising twist on its classic fare. Several months after closing his 17-year-old stall at Old Airport Road Food Centre, Toast Hut owner Melvin Soh has found a new home for the business. The eatery officially re-opened on Monday (Feb 17) in a shop space within Connection One Tower 1 at 168 Jalan Bukit Merah. However, the menu takes a noticeable departure from its former offerings.

The popular kaya toast, an item many would expect at such an eatery, has been temporarily removed. 'There will be no kaya toast till further notice, but coffee and tea will definitely be back,' Soh shared. The signature toast has been replaced by another beloved Singaporean staple — 'cai fan', or economic rice.In a post on Feb 10, Soh revealed the new menu also features fried bee hoon, fried noodles and fried kway teow, all served with a variety of side dishes. Speaking to AsiaOne, Soh explained his choice to reopen in Bukit Merah because he had previously operated a cafe there called Sandffee, which closed during the pandemic. He also clarified that while toast sales will 'be on hold for now' due to manpower issues, it will 'come back eventually'. Previously, in an interview last October, Soh had explained that he closed his stall at Old Airport Road Food Centre due to staffing difficulties. The stall required at least four staff members, and while his mother, aunt, and another employee helped him, he struggled to find replacements willing to work long hours at a reasonable wage. He had already expressed plans to open a stall selling dishes that required less manpower and skill, such as economic fried bee hoon and Kuala Lumpur-style Hokkien noodles. 'Scooping food onto a plate should be an easier job to be done. Whereas for Toast Hut, we have to toast the bread, brew coffee, take orders and wash cups,' he had explained at the time.
