HONG KONG: An assault on pro-democracy protesters by suspected triad gangsters that left dozens wounded sparked a firestorm of outrage in Hong Kong on Monday , in a dramatic escalation of political turmoil plaguing the Chinese city.
"Their very barbaric and violent acts have already completely violated the bottom line of Hong Kong's civilised society," he told reporters. City police chief Stephen Lo defended his officers, saying they were busy dealing with violent anti-government protests elsewhere. At a briefing around midnight on Monday into Tuesday, police said six men had been arrested, including some with alleged triad backgrounds.
