US President Donald Trump plans to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin this week to discuss a potential 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine, following a positive meeting between US envoy Steve Witkoff and Putin in Moscow.
US President Donald Trump is expected to speak with his Russia n counterpart Vladimir Putin this week regarding potential solutions to end the three-year war in Ukraine , US envoy Steve Witkoff revealed to CNN on Sunday (Mar 16) following a 'positive' meeting with Putin in Moscow. Witkoff, who met with Putin on Thursday night, stated, 'I expect that there will be a call with both presidents this week, and we're also continuing to engage and have conversations with the Ukrainians.
' He expressed optimism that the conversation between Trump and Putin would be 'really good and positive.' Trump is seeking Putin's support for a 30-day ceasefire proposal, which Ukraine accepted last week. Despite the ceasefire proposal, both sides continued to exchange heavy aerial strikes throughout the weekend. Trump expressed hope in a social media post on Friday that there was 'a very good chance that this horrible, bloody war can finally come to an end.' In a separate development, Ukrainian troops were pushed out of their months-old foothold in the western Russian region of Kursk. Putin pledged to honor Trump's request to spare the lives of surrendering Ukrainian troops. The Kremlin also confirmed on Friday that Putin conveyed his ceasefire plan to Trump through Witkoff, expressing 'cautious optimism' about reaching a deal to end the conflict. Despite these positive developments, Witkoff, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Trump's national security adviser Mike Waltz, all emphasized during appearances on Sunday shows that significant challenges remain before Russia agrees to a ceasefire, let alone a lasting peaceful resolution to the war. Waltz, when questioned on ABC about the US's stance on a peace deal allowing Russia to retain control of seized eastern Ukrainian territories, responded, 'Are we going to drive every Russian off of every inch of Ukrainian soil?' Rubio, speaking on CBS, stated that a final peace agreement would 'involve a lot of hard work, concessions from both Russia and Ukraine,' and that negotiations would be difficult to initiate 'as long as they're shooting at each other.' Trump has warned that if a ceasefire is not reached, the conflict between Moscow and Kyiv could escalate into World War III. His administration took steps last week to encourage further cooperation on a ceasefire. On Saturday, Trump announced that General Keith Kellogg's role had been narrowed from special envoy for Ukraine and Russia to solely Ukraine, following Russian officials' attempts to exclude him from peace talks. Additionally, a license permitting US energy transactions with Russian financial institutions expired last week, according to the Trump administration, increasing pressure on Putin to reach a peace agreement regarding Ukraine. The US Treasury Department is exploring possible sanctions on Russian oil majors and oilfield service companies, according to a source familiar with the matter, furthering steps already taken by Biden
