A young man wearing a baseball cap emblazoned with “Dior,' women clutching infants and children bundled against the cold step into a Tunisian Maritime National Guard boat and away from their dreams of life in Europe.

Migrants, mainly from sub-Saharan Africa, are stopped by Tunisian Maritime National Guard at sea during an attempt to get to Italy, near the coast of Sfax, Tunisia, Tuesday, April 18, 2023. The Associated Press, on a recent overnight expedition with the National Guard, witnessed migrants pleading to continue their journeys to Italy in unseaworthy vessels, some taking on water. Over 14 hours, 372 people were plucked from their fragile boats.

In a single day in March, a record 2,900 migrants were stopped in the Sfax region, the nearby coastal city of Mahdia and the Kerkennah Islands, off the Sfax coast, said National Guard Brig. Gen. Sabeur Younes. Each night, National Guard vessels comb the waters. Pulling out the dead is the grimmest part of the job. Already this year more than 800 people have lost their lives trying to cross the central Mediterranean, including nearly 300 just in the last 10 days, the International Organization for Migration said Thursday. The Tunisian coast alone saw hundreds of deaths last year.

Considered victims, not lawbreakers, those stopped en route are set free at the port, many to try again. Determination prevailed even among some whose trips were cut short, like Meriam, who was turned back for a third time.
