ince the days of Ada Lovelace—and really since humans began imagining “thinking” machines—there have been indications that artificial intelligence would have very real impacts on our society and world. Since those early days, we’ve been exposed to contrasting visions of an AI future—through science fiction and the existence of early prototypes, for example, as well as during think tank debates and discussions at conferences.
There are some deeper-seated considerations we need to address, though. AI, for example, is only as good as the data sets it learns from, and the data we have are reflective of the world as it is rather than of how we’d wish it to be. We run the real risk of permanently cementing today’s biases and other inequities if we don’t take real steps to address this.
Pioneers are forging solutions to these problems by making AI more explainable and removing bias from data sets and the outputs of algorithms. Massive efforts are underway to boost diversity in STEM disciplines in general, and the business world is waking up not just to the morality of diversifying the workforce but also to the undeniable business benefits of doing so.
All of these lines of inquiry, which you can read more about in this issue of Forbes AI, will be critical to creating AI that functions as a tool for humans—a creative force that’s keenly attuned to our needs and resists misuse.
