Why Disneyland’s latest attraction is far from just a ride
Share to linkedin... [+]When Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance opened at Disneyland earlier this month it was hailed by critics as being out of this world.
When the first movie in the sci-fi saga was released in 1977 its realism captured the hearts of movie-goers. Up to then, films set in space usually had a sterile appearance with spotless floors, strip lighting and gaudy costumes. Star Wars was a game-changer as its worlds looked lived in. Dusty boxes sat in the corners of rooms on the spaceships, wires hung out of the walls inside houses and the futuristic vehicles were battered and rusty.
It is meant to be the remote planet of Batuu and the attractions there are supposed to be real experiences which take place in the land. One sees guests taking the controls of the iconic Star Wars space ship the Millennium Falcon to smuggle cargo. When the ship in the ride-cum-queue is captured by the First Order, the doors slide open to reveal Cast Members dressed in the enemies’ trademark dark suits and peaked caps. In-keeping with their characters, the staff seem surly and hurry guests into a detention cell on the First Order’s Star Destroyer so that they can be grilled about the location of the secret rendez-vous point with General Organa.
