By trading up to No. 3, GM Nick Caserio found a way to get both the QB and edge rusher...

Alabama linebacker Will Anderson Jr. celebrates with fans after being chosen by the Texans with the third pick of the NFL draft Thursday evening in Kansas City. The executive defined by his trades turned in his most astonishing exchange, a dumbfounding deal that stunned a city that has long waited for him to deliver a winner.

The Texans chose not to trade up with the Bears, who instead dealt the No. 1 pick for a substantial haul from the quarterback-needy Panthers, who snagged Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, the 2021 Heisman Trophy winner, on Thursday night. The scenario created a conundrum, with quarterback-needy teams clogged between Houston’s picks at No. 2 and 12. The Texans could not count on taking a non-QB and having their preferred passer still available by the time they picked again.

Caserio’s choice to trade signals both the franchise’s urgency and expectation to compete in 2023. It brought to mind former general manager Rick Smith’s move up in 2017 to select Watson. Acquiring both Stroud and Anderson eclipsed it.

It isn’t known what compensation it would've required for the Titans to move eight spots from No. 11 to acquire the second-best quarterback in the draft. It would’ve likely been substantial in a quarterback-heavy draft. But it's logical to think that by picking Stroud at No. 2, the Texans drove down the market price in order to make the trade to No. 3 themselves.
