The 2009 National League batting champion, now 35, could, pending a physical, be an option for the Indians at DH or first base.
Hanley Ramirez, who last played in the majors with the Red Sox in May of 2018, could be an option at DH or even first base for the Indians.
Three non-roster outfielders in camp have combined to hit more home runs in the majors than the seven outfielders on the roster. The non-roster outfielders, Matt Joyce , Trayce Thompson and Brandon Barnes have hit a combined 180 homers. The other two non-roster outfielders in camp, Daniel Johnson and Mike Papi, have yet to make their major league debuts.
According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Indians and Ramirez have agreed on a minor-league deal, pending the results of his physical. Indians manager Terry Francona has declined to speak about Ramirez until he’s officially signed. But in the meantime, the Indians’ outfield in particular, and their offense in general, is officially a construction zone.“I don’t know how we’re going to be set up ,” Francona told reporters in Goodyear, Ariz. “We don’t know what our roster is yet.
The only reason Ramirez is being lumped with the outfielders in this discussion is because the outfield is where the Indians are the most offensively-challenged, and Ramirez’s presence in the lineup potentially could move Santana or Bauers to left field.
