A 66-year-old man has been sentenced to 14 years and 11 months in jail for his role in the abuse and death of a 19-year-old woman who was starved, beaten, and chained in a toilet.
The woman, Huang Baoying, lost 43 percent of her body weight before her death from severe malnutrition and blunt force trauma. The man, Lim, pleaded guilty to one count of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and was initially sentenced to 14 years and five months in prison, with an additional six months in lieu of caning, due to his age.
The prosecution had asked for a 20-year sentence, arguing that the case was of the worst type of culpable homicide, but the judge disagreed, citing that Lim's involvement was the least of the three perpetrators. The case involved Huang Baoying being subjected to full-blown torture and abuse by her brother and stepmother over several months.
The three individuals had managed to starve her, beat her, and chain her in the toilet as a form of punishment, with the aim of teaching her lessons about hunger and gratitude. The abuse had begun in 2020, after the group moved into Lim's home, where they had been confined to the toilet for prolonged periods, including nearly the entire month of March 2021.
Lim's lawyer argued that his client's involvement was different from that of his co-accused, due to their familial relationships with the victim, and that punishing Lim accordingly would be unfair
