Circle Line Tunnel Reinforcement Ahead of Schedule; CCL6 on Track for Mid-2026 Opening

Reinforcement work on a section of the Circle Line tunnels is progressing faster than expected, paving the way for the timely restoration of full train services. Additionally, Circle Line Stage 6 is slated to open in mid-2026, with weekend service adjustments planned for testing and commissioning. Shuttle bus services will be available to help commuters during these adjustments.

Reinforcement work on a critical section of the Circle Line tunnels is progressing ahead of schedule, allowing for the timely resumption of full train services. The Land Transport Authority ( LTA ) and train operator S MRT announced on Thursday, March 26th, that the installation of steel plates along the tunnel segment between Paya Lebar and Stadium MRT stations is nearing completion.

This project, which has been running around the clock since January 17th, aims to strengthen the tunnel infrastructure and address the issue of tunnel squatting. Tunnel squatting, a phenomenon where underground tunnels built in soft soil, such as marine clay, become deformed due to the compression of the overlying soil, poses a significant challenge. The accelerated progress is attributed to the teams' increasing familiarity with the intricate work processes, particularly during the later phases of the project. This efficiency gain has allowed the teams to achieve time savings, ultimately leading to the anticipated earlier completion of the reinforcement works. The project's timely progress is a testament to the dedication and expertise of the teams involved. \Full train services are scheduled to resume on April 10th, marking a significant milestone in the restoration of regular operations. While full service will be restored, weekday peak period shuttle buses will continue to operate, albeit at a reduced frequency, to accommodate passenger needs during the transition period. In addition to the tunnel reinforcement updates, Acting Minister for Transport Jeffrey Siow shared insights on the progress of Circle Line Stage 6 (CCL6). Speaking to the media at Dakota MRT station on Thursday, Siow confirmed that CCL6 is on track to open in mid-2026. CCL6 encompasses three new stations: Keppel, Cantonment, and Prince Edward Road, linking HarbourFront and Marina Bay stations. The integration of CCL6 systems with the existing network necessitates adjustments to train service timings on weekends to facilitate testing and commissioning works. From April 11th to May 17th, the last train service will depart earlier at 11:00 PM on Saturdays, and the first train will begin later at 9:00 AM on Sundays. \To ensure convenient transport during the weekend service adjustments, two shuttle bus services will be available from 5:00 AM to 9:00 AM on Sundays. Shuttle 36 will operate between all stations at intervals of seven to ten minutes, while Shuttle 37 will provide service between Bishan and Promenade stations every three to five minutes. Commuters are advised to plan their journeys in advance and factor in potential travel time increases of up to 30 minutes. Alternative routes are also recommended to mitigate any inconvenience. The completion of the Circle Line Stage 6 promises enhanced connectivity and increased convenience for commuters. 'Once [CCL6] is completed, the whole of the CCL will be complete, and commuters will be able to enjoy service as planned. This is something that we're all looking forward to,' Siow concluded. The ongoing efforts to strengthen existing infrastructure, coupled with the expansion of the Circle Line, are crucial steps towards maintaining and improving the efficiency and reliability of Singapore's public transportation network
